Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
The opening phrase, “At that time Jesus answered,” presents a profound moment in Scripture. Upon inspection, it becomes clear there was no recorded inquiry or spoken interaction with another person at that point. Yet, Jesus responds, “I thank thee, O Father,” illustrating a deep, ongoing fellowship between Christ and His Father. This passage does not merely highlight a singular event but reveals the continual, intimate communion that characterized Jesus’ life and ministry.
In human interactions, an answer always follows a question or a statement; it is a response to audible communication. Here, however, Jesus answers without any visible dialogue. Who had He heard? His Father. The Gospel narrative does not record the Father’s words in this moment, but Jesus responds nonetheless. This silence in the record teaches us that God’s communication with Jesus—and by extension, with all believers—is often inward, spiritual, and persistent. It was not an extraordinary occurrence for Jesus, but the very pattern and habit of His life: to continually converse with God.
The lesson here is clear and challenging. If Christ lived in constant, silent fellowship with His Father, then as His followers, we are invited into that same intimacy. Our communion with God need not be outwardly visible or audible to those around us. We may find ourselves answering the secret voice of God in our hearts, responding to His Spirit in ways that the world cannot perceive. Spiritual fellowship is not reserved for moments of crisis or public worship, but is meant to infuse our everyday existence.
How do we respond to God’s silent whispers? Sometimes, it means affirming His truth and faithfulness, “setting our seal” to the promises He has made. Other times, it involves confession—acknowledging the sin that God’s Spirit has revealed within us. We may respond in gratitude for mercies received or express agreement with spiritual truths that the Holy Ghost has illuminated. Each response is a form of dialogue, a spiritual answer to the divine conversation happening within our hearts.
Intimate communion with God is a privilege beyond compare. It is a secret joy, hidden from the world and untouched even by our closest companions. This inner fellowship is personal, sacred, and transformative. To hear God’s voice, our spiritual ears must be attuned, cleansed, and ready. The more we practice listening, the more readily we will answer Him in faith, obedience, and love.
God’s Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit urges us to prepare our hearts, even in this very moment, for true fellowship with our Heavenly Father. May we, like Jesus, be so in tune with the Spirit that when God speaks, we are ready to answer—whether in prayer, worship, confession, or gratitude. In the quiet moments, may we know the joy of responding to God’s voice, a privilege that remains unseen and unshared except between our Heavenly Father and us.
