Revelation 19:1\u00a0 <\/span>After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, \u201cHallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.\u201d Once more they cried out, \u201cHallelujah! The smoke from her goes up forever and ever.\u201d And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, \u201cAmen. Hallelujah!\u201d And from the throne came a voice saying, \u201cPraise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Those in heaven offer three reasons for their praise. First, \u201cbecause His judgments are true and righteous.\u201d Second, \u201cbecause He has judged the notorious prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality.\u201d Third, because \u201cHe has avenged the blood of His slaves that was on her hands\u201d. The vast multitude again sings, \u201cHallelujah! Her smoke ascends forever and ever!\u201d.<\/p>\n

We should not lose sight of the fact that the rejoicing multitude exults not merely in the defeat of God\u2019s enemies \u2013 and theirs \u2013 but in the just and true nature of His judgments. The destruction of the great prostitute is a proper act of vengeance for her martyring the servants of God. This judgment, however, is only the beginning of the everlasting punishment of the wicked, as testified by the statement that her smoke \u201cascends forever and ever\u201d (v. 3). \u201cWe do not rejoice at the sinfulness of Babylon,\u201d writes Warren Wiersbe, \u201cor even the greatness of Babylon\u2019s fall. We rejoice that God is \u2018true and righteous\u2019 and that He is glorified by His holy judgments\u201d<\/p>\n
