Joshua 6:18 \u00a0 <\/span>But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.<\/p>\n

Joshua 7:10 \u00a0 <\/span>The Lord said to Joshua, \u201cGet up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies.<\/p>\n

Joshua 7:19 \u00a0 <\/span>Then Joshua said to Achan, \u201cMy son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.\u201d And Achan answered Joshua, \u201cTruly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord. And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. And Joshua said, \u201cWhy did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.\u201d And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the story of Achan, we see just how deceptive sin can be. In the midst of a miraculous victory, Achan was enticed by a robe, some silver, and some gold\u2014certainly, none of that compares with the power of God he had just witnessed. Yet we know our own hearts can be just as easily swayed.\u00a0James 1:14\u201315<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says, \u201cEach person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.\u201d<\/i><\/b> Another aspect of sin\u2019s deception is that it promises a benefit that it just can\u2019t deliver. The stolen items did Achan absolutely no good; he couldn\u2019t spend the money, and he couldn\u2019t wear the clothes. What seemed of great worth to him was actually worthless, buried in a hole in the ground while guilt festered in his heart. The gold and silver Achan stole was stolen from God Himself. The precious metals were to be added to the treasury of the Lord, and, in stealing them, Achan robbed God directly.\u00a0God is holy and is not to be disobeyed without risking dire consequences.<\/p>\n

We fool ourselves if we think we can neglect God\u2019s word and we will be able to keep sin from enticing and tempting us.\u00a0 <\/span>How can a person who chooses to neglect God\u2019s word find the armor to fight self-interest, satan\u2019s lies, and cultural influences? \u00a0 <\/span>They won\u2019t be able to and it must be said that disobedience brings ruin even upon the innocent. Sin\u2019s effects go beyond the initial sinner.\u00a0 <\/span>It will have an effect on your family and your friends.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
