Joshua 22:4 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half- tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size. And the people of Israel heard it said, \u201cBehold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half- tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.\u201d And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them.<\/strong>
\nBut now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God.<\/strong>
\nThen the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half- tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel, \u201cThe Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord.<\/strong> Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, \u2018What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?<\/strong> For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord. \u2019 So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord. Therefore we said, \u2018Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, \u201cYou have no portion in the Lord.\u201d\u2019 And we thought, \u2018If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, \u201cBehold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you<\/strong>.\u201d\u2019 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!\u201d
\nAnd the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled. The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, \u201cFor,\u201d they said, \u201cit is a witness between us that the Lord is God”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Talk about doing the right thing and being totally misunderstood. \u00a0The people of Reuben and Gad built this alter as a reminder and witness\u00a0that they to were children of God. \u00a0This was for both their generation as well future generations. \u00a0How many times do we do something with proper intent and it is misunderstood? \u00a0I am sure you have heard it said “when we judge others we do so by their actions” yet “when we judge ourselves we do so with our intent”. \u00a0There are a couple of points in this that is worth remembering: \u00a01. When we see our brothers in what appears to be sin we should go speak to them. Scripture\u00a0says that we should go first by ourselves and if they don’t listen we should go with a brother and if they do not listen then we are to distance ourselves from them in hopes they will turn from their ways. \u00a0I was impressed the other tribes had sent leaders with the head priest to offer them to come live in their land so that they did not fall under the wrath of God. \u00a0(at this point they still believed the tribes of Reuben and Gad had done wrong). \u00a02. It is important to be observant to the actions of our brothers and should we see something of concern we need to speak to them about it. \u00a0Actions of others may lead us to one thought but their intent could be pure. \u00a0When something like this occurs we need to have the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, heart of Love, and desire of obedience. \u00a0However, what I normally see is a rumor mill running and no one willing to go speak to the other person. \u00a0There is no room for this and every brother\/sister in the Lord should shut down anything with a hint of rumoring. \u00a0Wouldn’t you want someone to care enough about you and your walk with God that they would speak with you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
