<\/p>\n
\nLuk 8:26-39<\/b>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.\u00a0When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs.\u00a0When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, \u201cWhat have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.\u201d\u00a0For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)\u00a0Jesus then asked him, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d And he said, \u201cLegion,\u201d for many demons had entered him.\u00a0And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.\u00a0Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.\u00a0Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.\u00a0When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.\u00a0Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.\u00a0And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.\u00a0Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.\u00a0The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,\u00a0\u201cReturn to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.\u201d And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.<\/p>\n
Jas 2:19<\/b>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>\u00a0You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe\u2014and shudder!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The Bible teaches that we are both body and spirit. But the point is that the spirit world is very real, and it impacts our lives every day.<\/p>\n
One account in the Bible shows the characteristics of demons better than any other passage. In Luke 8:26\u201339, Jesus met a man who was tormented by many demons. Notice the characteristics of demons that we can derive from this passage.<\/p>\n
Demons have intellect.<\/em>\u00a0When the demons saw Jesus, they said, \u201cWhat business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?\u201d (v. 28). They immediately recognized Jesus. Demons are theologically orthodox. They believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for the sins of the world. But believing the right things about Jesus is not what gets you into heaven. James 2:19 says, \u201cYou believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.\u201d Believing in Jesus does not mean believing a set of facts about Jesus; it means trusting in Him and Him alone to save you from eternal death. No demon has done that.<\/p>\n
Demons have emotions.<\/em>\u00a0They feel things. In Luke 8, the demons begged Jesus not to send them into the abyss (v. 31). Scholars disagree about what the abyss is, but we know it is such a horrible place that the demons begged Jesus not to send them there.<\/p>\n
Demons have a will.<\/em>\u00a0The demons in Luke 8 proposed an alternative. Verse 32 says, \u201cThere was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine.\u201d Jesus agreed to that, and He sent the demons into the swine.<\/p>\n
Demons have names.<\/em>\u00a0The chief demon identified himself in verse 30 as \u201cLegion,\u201d a military term for a group of six thousand soldiers. Apparently, he had authority over a group of demons.<\/p>\n
Demons are real beings, and people who ignore the reality of demons do so to their own hurt. Understanding the reality of demons is necessary for gaining spiritual victory in your life. (Jeffress)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
