The explanation for the addition of prayer lies in Greek grammar. \u201cPraying\u201d is a participle, not a verbal imperative command like \u201ctake the helmet\u201d and \u201c[take] the sword\u201d (Ephesians 6:17). In Paul\u2019s mind, praying was a means to accomplishing the previous instructions: Put on the armor while praying.<\/p>\n For Paul, prayer was akin to breathing\u2014a natural activity of communication with God. Just as we don\u2019t need to be commanded to breathe, we shouldn\u2019t need to be commanded to pray. And yet Paul does, as a reminder, in 1 Thessalonians 5:17: \u201cPray without ceasing.\u201d Just as breathing is a continual exercise, so should prayer be: Pray\u00a0all the time<\/em>\u00a0(\u201calways\u201d), with\u00a0all prayer<\/em>, with\u00a0all perseverance<\/em>, for\u00a0all the saints<\/em>\u2014the four \u201calls\u201d of prayer. Prayer is a critical component in being \u201cstrong in the Lord\u201d (Ephesians 6:10). Coating our spiritual armor in prayer provides power and wisdom in spiritual battles.<\/p>\n How long can you live without breathing?
