\nDeu 27:15-26<\/b>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the LORD, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.\u2019 And all the people shall answer and say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor’s landmark.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s nakedness.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c\u2018Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.\u2019 And all the people shall say, \u2018Amen.\u2019<\/p>\n
Declared curses upon those who break the covenant would make a remarkable impression. The Levites declared, and the people agreed to, curses upon those who break God\u2019s law.<\/p>\n
i. Curses upon idolaters.<\/p>\n
ii. Curses upon those who dishonor their parents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
iii. Curses upon those who steal.<\/p>\n
iv. Curses upon those who are simply cruel.<\/p>\n
v. Curses upon\u00a0the one who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and widow.<\/p>\n
vi. Curses upon those who disobey God\u2019s sexual standards (regarding incest and bestiality).<\/p>\n
vii. Curses upon the violent (the one who attacks his neighbor secretly).<\/p>\n
viii. Curses upon those who cheat the courts.<\/p>\n
Finally \u2013 if one believes they have escaped these curses \u2013 there was a curse pronounced upon\u00a0the one who does not conform to all the words of this law. Even if somehow, we have escaped all the previous curses, none can\u00a0conform to all the words of this law.<\/p>\n
When all are found guilty before the law, and it is clear that they cannot\u00a0conform to all the words of this law<\/b>, there is still hope. A clue to this hope is found in the beginning of the chapter, where God declared that an altar be built \u2013 not upon Mount Gerizim, the mountain of blessing, but upon Mount Ebal, the mountain of cursing. We need the covering and atoning sacrifice exactly at the point where our sin and failures are revealed and God\u2019s curse is pronounced on our sin.<\/p>\n
It is important to recognize that we, in Jesus Christ, do not have an Old Covenant relationship with God. We expect to be blessed, not because of our obedience, but because of our position in Jesus. The curse we deserved was laid upon Him (Galatians 3:10-14<\/span><\/a>). Though there may be an inherent curse of consequences in our disobedience, or even the correcting hand of God, under the New Covenant, He does not punish us or curse us \u2013 because all that we deserved, past, present, and future, was poured out upon Jesus.
