Romans 15:1 \u00a0 <\/span>We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, \u201cThe reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>2 Corinthians 12:10<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>1 Corinthians 9:22<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Philippians 2:4-5<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.\u00a0\u00a0Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If you consider yourself strong in comparison to your brother, use your strength to serve your brothers in Christ \u2013 instead of using your \u201cstrength\u201d just to please yourself. The idea isn\u2019t really bearing\u00a0with<\/i>, but bearing\u00a0up<\/i>\u00a0the weaker brother \u2013 supporting him with your strength.\u00a0 <\/span>This goes against the whole tenor of our times, which counsels people to \u201clook out for\u00a0number 1<\/span><\/a>\u201d and despises those who live lives of real sacrifice for the sake of others. Yet, undeniably Paul points the way to true happiness and fulfillment in life \u2013 get your eyes off of yourself, start building up others and you will find yourself built up. \u00a0 <\/span>It is a simple yet challenging call to simply put our neighbor first. Paul later wrote much the same thing in\u00a0Philippians 2:3-4<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. <\/i>\u00a0This does not mean that the church is ruled by the whims of the weak. \u201cA genuine concern for the weak will mean an attempt to make them strong by leading them out of their irrational scruples so that they, too, can be strong.\u201d (Morris) All too often, Christians find it easier to tear each other down instead of building each other up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
