John 10:31\u00a0 <\/span>The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, \u201cI have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?\u201d The Jews answered him, \u201cIt is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.\u201d Jesus answered them, \u201cIs it not written in your Law, I said, you are gods\u2019? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came\u2014and Scripture cannot be broken\u2014 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, \u2018You are blaspheming,\u2019 because I said, \u2018I am the Son of God\u2019? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.\u201d Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. And many came to him. And they said, \u201cJohn did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.\u201d And many believed in him there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHe is not \u2018making himself God\u2019; he is not \u2018making himself\u2019 anything, but in word and work he is showing himself to be what he truly is \u2013 the Son sent by the Father to bring life and light to mankind.\u201d (Bruce) The judges of\u00a0Psalm 82<\/span><\/a>\u00a0were called \u201cgods<\/b>\u201d because in their office they determined the fate of other men. Also, in\u00a0Exodus 21:6<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a022:8-9<\/span><\/a>, God called earthly judges \u201cgods<\/b>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came<\/b>: Jesus reasoned, \u201cIf God gave these unjust judges the title \u2018gods\u2019 because of their office, why do you consider it blasphemy that I call Myself the \u2018Son of God\u2019 in light of the testimony of Me and My works? \u201cThe judges as well as the lawgivers and prophets of the old dispensation, as it is pointed out in verse 35, were those\u00a0unto whom the word of God came<\/i>, while Jesus is\u00a0Himself<\/i>\u00a0sent by God, the very Word of God made flesh.\u201d (Tasker) Even after Jesus refuted their charges they still chose to pick up stones to stone Him.\u00a0 <\/span>Hardened hearts and minds do not listen or even try to understand.\u00a0 <\/span>We need to be mindful of what we may harden our hearts and minds to in the Word of God.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus went to the very place where you would think they would see and understand.\u00a0 <\/span>God sent His Son, the Messiah, to His chosen people and He was rejected by those who should have seen and recognized Him clearly.\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus was rejected and left. John did not do any miracles but He followed and obeyed the call on his life by God.\u00a0 <\/span>He had special work to do and had a lasting influence.\u00a0 <\/span>It is easy to think that special service is only given to very special people and that great tasks are not for common people.\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing could be further from the truth.\u00a0 <\/span>Have you ever heard of Mordecai Ham?\u00a0 <\/span>He was the preacher who spoke the Word of God when Billy Graham was saved. Here are a few others who did not let their work interfere with their faith.\u00a0 <\/span>William Turner<\/b>\u00a0MA was an English divine and reformer, a physician and a natural historian. He has been called “The father of English botany.”<\/span><\/a> \u00a0 <\/span>Robert Boyle<\/b>\u00a0was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, theologian, chemist, physicist, and inventor. Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. <\/span><\/a>Sir Isaac Newton<\/b>\u00a0was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author who is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution. <\/span><\/a> \u00a0 <\/span>John Ray<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1627\u20131705): English botanist who wrote\u00a0The Wisdom of God Manifested in the Works of the Creation<\/i>\u00a0(1691) and was among the first to attempt a biological definition for the concept of\u00a0species<\/i><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Gottfried Leibniz<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1646\u20131716): He was a philosopher who developed the philosophical theory of the\u00a0Pre-established harmony<\/span><\/a>; he is also most noted for his optimism, e.g., his conclusion that our Universe is, in a restricted sense, the best possible one that God could have created.\u00a0 \u2022 Antonie van Leeuwenhoek<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1632\u20131723): Dutch Reformed Calvinist who is remembered as the “father of microbiology”.<\/p>\n

Firmin Abauzit<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(1679\u20131767): physicist and theologian. He translated the\u00a0New Testament<\/span><\/a>\u00a0into French.\u00a0 <\/span>Emanuel Swedenborg<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1688\u20131772): He did a great deal of scientific research with the\u00a0Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences<\/span><\/a>\u00a0having commissioned work by him.[31]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0His religious writing is the basis of\u00a0Swedenborgianism<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and several of his theological works contained some science hypotheses, most notably the\u00a0Nebular hypothesis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for the origin of the Solar System.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Mikhail Lomonosov<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1711\u20131765): Russian Orthodox Christian who discovered the atmosphere of Venus and formulated the law of conservation of mass in chemical reactions.<\/p>\n

\u2022 John Abercrombie<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1780\u20131844): Scottish physician and Christian philosopher[48]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0who created the a textbook about\u00a0neuropathology<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marshall Hall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1790\u20131857): notable English physiologist who contributed with anatomical understanding and proposed a number of techniques in medical science. A Christian, his religious thoughts were collected in the biographical book\u00a0Memoirs of Marshall Hall, by his widow<\/i>[51]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1861). He was also an\u00a0abolitionist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who opposed slavery on religious grounds. He believed the institution of slavery was a\u00a0sin<\/span><\/a>\u00a0against God and denial of the Christian faith.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Benjamin Silliman<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1779\u20131864): chemist and science educator at Yale; the first person to distill petroleum, and a founder of the\u00a0American Journal of Science<\/i><\/span><\/a>, the oldest scientific journal in the United States. An outspoken Christian,[55]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0he was an old-earth creationist who openly rejected materialism. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Faraday<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1791\u20131867):\u00a0Glasite<\/span><\/a>\u00a0church elder for a time, he discussed the relationship of science to religion in a lecture opposing\u00a0Spiritualism<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 James David Forbes<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1809\u20131868):\u00a0physicist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0glaciologist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who worked extensively on the\u00a0conduction of heat<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0seismology<\/span><\/a>. He was a Christian as can be seen in the work\u00a0“Life and Letters of James David Forbes”<\/i>\u00a0(1873).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Charles Babbage<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1791\u20131871): mathematician and analytical philosopher known as the first computer scientist who originated the idea of a programmable computer. He wrote the\u00a0Ninth Bridgewater Treatise<\/i><\/span><\/a>,[61]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>[62]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Passages from the Life of a Philosopher<\/i>\u00a0(1864) where he raised arguments to rationally defend the belief in\u00a0miracles<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Adam Sedgwick<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1785\u20131873): Anglican priest and geologist whose\u00a0A Discourse on the Studies of the University<\/i>\u00a0discusses the relationship of God and man.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

John Bachman<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1790\u20131874): wrote numerous scientific articles and named several species of animals. He also was a founder of the\u00a0Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

James Clerk Maxwell<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1831\u20131879): Although Clerk as a boy was taken to Presbyterian services by his father and to Anglican services by his aunt, while still a young student at Cambridge he underwent an Evangelical conversion that he described as having given him a new perception of the Love of God.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Gregor Mendel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1822\u20131884):\u00a0Augustinian<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Abbot<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who was the “father of modern genetics” for his study of the inheritance of traits in pea plants.[71]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0He preached sermons at Church,\u00a0one of which<\/span><\/a>\u00a0deals with how Easter represents Christ’s victory over death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Emil Theodor Kocher<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1841\u20131917):\u00a0Swiss<\/span><\/a>\u00a0physician and medical researcher who received the 1909\u00a0Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for his work in the physiology, pathology and surgery of the\u00a0thyroid<\/span><\/a>. Kocher was a deeply religious man and also part of the\u00a0Moravian Church<\/span><\/a>, Kocher attributed all his successes and failures to God.<\/p>\n

George Washington Carver<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1864\u20131943): American\u00a0scientist<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0botanist<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0educator<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0inventor<\/span><\/a>. Carver believed he could have faith both in God and science and integrated them into his life. He testified on many occasions that his faith in\u00a0Jesus<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was the only mechanism by which he could effectively pursue and perform the art of science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Charles Milton Altland Stine<\/b>\u00a0(1882\u20131954) was a chemist and a vice-president of DuPont who created the laboratory from which nylon and other significant inventions were made. He was also a devout Christian who authored a book about religion and science.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Ronald Fisher<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1890\u20131962): English statistician, evolutionary biologist and geneticist. He preached sermons and published articles in church magazines.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Igor Sikorsky<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1889\u20131972): Russian\u2013American aviation pioneer in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Sikorsky was a deeply religious\u00a0Russian Orthodox<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Christian[140]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and authored two religious and philosophical books (The Message of the Lord’s Prayer<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0The Invisible Encounter<\/i>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sir Robert Boyd<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1922\u20132004): pioneer in British space science who was Vice President of the\u00a0Royal Astronomical Society<\/span><\/a>. He lectured on faith being a founder of the “Research Scientists’ Christian Fellowship” and an important member of its predecessor\u00a0Christians in Science<\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stanley Jaki<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1924\u20132009):\u00a0Benedictine<\/span><\/a>\u00a0priest and Distinguished Professor of Physics at Seton Hall University, New Jersey, who won a Templeton Prize and advocated the idea modern science could only have arisen in a Christian society.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Denis Alexander<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(born 1945): Emeritus Director of the\u00a0Faraday Institute<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0University of Cambridge<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and author of\u00a0Rebuilding the Matrix \u2013 Science and Faith in the 21st Century<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Francis Collins<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(born 1950): director of the\u00a0National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and former director of the US\u00a0National Human Genome Research Institute<\/span><\/a>. He has also written on religious matters in articles and the book\u00a0The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

<\/i>William Newsome<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(born 1952):\u00a0neuroscientist<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0Stanford University<\/span><\/a>. A member of the\u00a0National Academy of Sciences<\/span><\/a>. Co-chair of the\u00a0BRAIN Initiative<\/span><\/a>, “a rapid planning effort for a ten-year assault on how the brain works.”[240]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0He has written about his faith: “When I discuss religion with my fellow scientists…I realize I am an oddity \u2014 a serious Christian and a respected scientist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Higby Schweitzer<\/span><\/a>: paleontologist at\u00a0North Carolina State University<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who believes in the synergy of the Christian faith and the truth of empirical science.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 <\/span>Gerhard Ertl<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(born 1936): 2007\u00a0Nobel Prize<\/span><\/a>\u00a0winner in Chemistry. He has said in an interview that “I believe in God. (…) I am a Christian and I try to live as a Christian (…) I read the Bible very often and I try to understand it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fred Brooks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(born 1931): American computer architect, software engineer, and computer scientist, best known for managing the development of IBM’s System\/360 family of computers and the OS\/360 software support package, then later writing candidly about the process in his seminal book The Mythical Man-Month. Brooks has received many awards, including the\u00a0National Medal of Technology<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 1985 and the\u00a0Turing Award<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 1999. Brooks is an evangelical Christian who is active with\u00a0InterVarsity Christian Fellowship<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
